c’mon holy ghosts

The best thing that happened to me this week was not having to work today. I was supposed to (we were going to be closing early), but so many people were taking the day off or working from home that my boss told me to take the day. Unexpected three-day weekend? Yes please. I did a little cleaning today and the dog was kind of a pain, but mostly it was just delightful.

What else? Had some quality lady-bro time on Sunday, went on an excellent date Tuesday. Slept like shit most of the week which was unfortunate and entirely the fault of two pets who shall not be named.

**I started writing this Friday evening, saved a draft, and it is now in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Oops.

Chris Messina playing a kind-of-bad guy on The Newsroom is a little bit of a bummer. But dang, I do love him. Related: I have spent the last couple days finally watching The Newsroom. Aaron Sorkin for the win.

I went to the bar with Darren tonight, against my better judgement. Any time I go to a bar that’s not the Half Time Rec it’s against my better judgement, really. Terrible DJ, to start, and when I ordered a gin & tonic I’m pretty sure they gave me gin and 7-Up. I actually had to ask Darren to taste my drink because I wasn’t even entirely sure there was alcohol in it. He assured me there was. Lesson: if you go to a shitty bar, just get your gin with a slice of lime.

Well, it feels about time to leave it to the bullet points:

  • Spending quality time with your lady-bros is the best
  • as is Thai food on date night
  • three day weekend
  • The Newsroom is good shit
  • I got a text from Kelsey that was just the best. I don’t have any actual sisters, but if I could I would chose those Wulf ladies.
  • gin. Gin gin gin. Oh! Related: my friend Jon and a good friend of his are starting a gin distillery. Super awesome.
  • Easter date in the morning. We’re going to Mickey’s

I wonder how soon Target will mark down their Easter candy…

Green was the silence, wet was the light; the month of June trembled like a butterfly.

It’s weekends like this that remind me how great Minnesota summers are.

Friday night, Kate and I went to a going away party for Shelly, who is moving to Arizona. I failed to take any pictures of the event. I also left a pan of brownies there, which I somewhat regret. I’ll have to get my pan back from Eric at some point. And then make more brownies, because they were delicious. After the party, Kate and I sat on her porch for people-watching outside the bar. It was chode night at the Rec, and I’m glad we weren’t there.

As for yesterday, here are some photos.

Lake Josephine

Kate, Amanda, Susanna, Christine, and I squeezed into one car and headed to the lake for a few hours. After being very diligent about sunblock reapplication, I managed to avoid burnination. I achieved a slight tan, actually, which is a nice change from the ghostly winter hue.

We stopped for ice cream when when left. Worth noting because ice cream is never not delicious.

I took an accidental nap when I got home, and then Darren and I went to the Rec for a celebration thing. The crowd was small and not made up of frat boys, thank goodness.

I snapped some pictures of bathroom graffiti.

There are a lot of ridiculous thing written in the ladies’ room. It makes me curious about the mens’. Not curious enough to find out.

We got charged for more drinks than we ordered, so I’m hoping I secretly paid for friends’ drinks and not the drinks of strangers. We left earlier than usual and got to bed at a reasonable enough time for a Saturday night.

Today: gyro brunch (Dino’s opens at 10! Come on. 10:30 gyro breakfast FTW), grocery shopping, sitting in air conditioning. I did manage a workout, just because the 30 Day Shred is mercifully only 20 minutes long. I don’t think Jillian would approve of my food/drink choices this weekend, but I’ll make up for it during the week. Probably.

I want to win the lottery so I can spend all summer just like this.

Rather gaudy, but also rather grand

Last night was opening night for La Cage Aux Folles in Minneapolis. Since my regular show date – Ms. Kate – is in Ireland right now,  I took Eric with me.

First, the show was delightful. George Hamilton is maybe getting a bit old (Eric pointed out that Jean-Michael was supposedly conceived during a “youthful indiscretion,” and said character is 24 years old. With Mr. Hamilton playing Georges, his 25-years-ago youthful indiscretion would have occurred when he was 47), but he was fun to see. Christopher Sieber as Albin, though. Dang. Dude OWNED that show. Fantastic. It was fun and funny and you should see it if you can.

So then there was the cast party. Eric and I hunkered down with some wine and I confess: waited for Mr. Sieber. We didn’t want to be creepers and interrupt his socializing and his eating, but eventually we managed a quick and hopefully not totally douchey hello, amazing job, quick photo op sort of thing.

After our fangirl moment, we slinked away and found ourselves mingling with a couple of La Cage’s drag queens. We ended up at the Brass Rail with them and Jeigh Madjus, who plays Jacob. He is tiny and wonderful. We socialized a little, but Eric and I mostly stuck to the bar until the hour became too ridiculous. We cabbed it back to St. Paul and I got to bed at about 3 am. Horrific.

My alarm went off at 7 and I wanted to punch myself in the face for staying out so late, but I did have a really good time. Fortunately I’m not dying today. Just quite sleepy.

So! To the cast and crew of La Cage Aux Folles: keep up the good work. Thank you for letting us tag along and I hope we weren’t total assholes.

I’ll post pictures once I get my paws on them.

*EDIT:

Here is ah picture, stolen from Eric’s Tumblr.

Me, Eric, Jeigh

Doctor Who and Tumblr are taking over my life

and that’s really all there is to it.

I had a  most excellent weekend, though. Friday was Heavyweights night. Kate, Amanda, and I acquired large sandwiches other delicious treats, and gathered in their living room to watch, well, Heavyweights. Obviously. Also, Iron Giant.

Saturday, Darren and I went to lunch at a disappointing local Vietnamese place. We probably won’t be back. Trieu Chau forever. Then, after an afternoon with the Doctor, I joined Kate, Becky, Asari, and others for 1: a Fringe show, and 2: Asian karaoke. The show, Minnesota Middle Finger, was delightful. Asian karaoke was ridiculous and awesome. It takes place in rooms off of a hair salon, which is upstairs from a Korean restaurant. Shady, yes. But much fun. Bonus point for Becky picking up beverages to sneak in.

Then Kate and I headed off to the Rec, where Becky eventually joined us. We took over the jukebox, I drank too much, and I scolded some dude for putting his hand on my thigh.

Sunday I had an epic hangover, but it didn’t stop the goodness. Sunday, you see, was me and Darren’s first anniversary. We decided to re-create our first date. So we hopped over to the Mall of America for burgers at Johnny Rocket’s. Then, when we discovered that the movie times were not favorable, we headed home and I mostly laid in bed waiting for my hangover to go away until it was movie time. We went over to Roseville and I picked up some trinkets at Forever 21 (I felt like an asshole amongst all the 16t year old girls, but their jewelry is adorable and cheap) before hopping over to the theatre for Horrible Bosses. I recommend the movie, by the way.

So I guess I’m not completely consumed by the internet, but how do you think I spend my weeknights? Well, let me just tell you that I’m ending this post now so I can unpause my Netflix. Thank you and good night.
